ROCHESTER, N.Y—The Union College baseball team dropped the final two games of its Liberty League series at Rochester, Sunday afternoon at Towers Field.
Rochester squeaked out a 3-2 win in game one, snapping Union's 10 game winning streak, before posting a 7-4 win in game two.
In the opening game, John Ghyzel improved to 5-0 on the mound for Rochester (12-12, 7-5 Liberty League), pitching a seven-hit complete game, allowing two runs (0 earned) on seven hits with a walk and six strikeouts.
Nick Williams pitched five innings for Union (14-6, 9-3), surrendering three earned runs on eight hits while striking out six.
Matt Yonta tossed two innings of shutout relief.
Rochester opened the scoring in the top of the second when Dan Warren plated Aiden Finch with a single through the right side.
The Yellowjackets added to the lead with two runs in the top of the fourth. Finch led off with a double, later scoring on a wild pitch, and Ryan Spurr drove in Steve Eychner with a sacrifice fly to deep center field.
In the bottom of the fifth,
Wiley Knight and
Matt Ferdenzi hit back-to-back singles to keep the inning alive and after
Jake Vesling reached on an error,
Jake Fishman delivered a two-out, two-run single to pull the Dutchmen within one, but that's as close as they would get.
Fishman and Knight both finished 2-for-3 at the plate.
Finch led the Yellowjackets offense, going 3-for-4 with two runs scored, Eychner was 2-for-3 and Warren went 2-for-2.
Rochester struck first again in game two, executing a squeeze play to perfection for the game's first run. Nolan Schultz doubled the lead with a single up the middle in the second.
Union answered with three runs in the bottom of the fourth to take its first lead.
Kent Curran and
Joe Ganim scored on a throwing error to tie the game and Vesling drilled a two-out single to left field that brought in
Anthony Amoroso.
The Dutchmen added to their lead in the bottom of the fifth when
Eric Egan scored on a Ganim sacrifice fly after leading off the inning with a double down the left-field line.
The Yellowjackets regained control of the game with five runs in the top of the eighth. Schultz produced his second RBI of the game with a single to right field, and after Union reliever
Ryan Kuchar struck out Pete Carrier, Jake Meyerson and Spurr had back-to-back two-run doubles for the 7-4 lead.
Meyerson did not allow a hit over the final two innings, earning his third win of season. He allowed one hit over 3 1/3 innings of relief, while UR starter Jack Denzer allowed four runs (one earned) on six hits over 5 2/3 innings.
Kuchar took the loss for the Dutchmen, allowing five earned runs on six hits with a walk and four strikeouts over two innings. Vesling allowed two earned runs on four hits over seven innings.
Union hosts Western New England for a single game at 7 p.m, Tuesday, April 19 at Shuttleworth Park.
