Western New England powers past baseball

AMSTERDAM, N.Y.—Western New England used two three-run innings to secure an 8-1 win against the Union College baseball team, Tuesday night at Shuttleworth Park.

The Dutchmen go to 14-7 overall, while the Golden Bears improve to 21-5.

Western New England starting pitcher Sean Halligan was dominant on the mound, tossing seven shutout innings and allowing just three hits with three walks, while striking out eight for his first win of the season.

Greg Geisel suffered the loss for Union, allowing three runs (two earned) on six hits with two walks and five strikeouts over five innings.

Eduardo Colemenares gave Western New England a 1-0 lead in the top of the first, scoring Kevin Marciano with a line drive to left field.

After Geisel walked the bases loaded to start the top of the second, Kevin Milne hit a sacrifice fly to double the Golden Bears lead.

Western New England took advantage of two Union errors in the sixth, adding on three runs to open a 5-0 lead. Marciano was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, Brett Morgan scored on a fielder's choice and Erik Lacaire scampered home on a wild pitch.

The Golden Bears produced another three-run inning in the top of the eighth, putting the game out of reach. Marciano notched his second RBI of the game with a double and then stole third before scoring on a Colemenares single up the middle. Colmenares scored from second on an errant pickoff attempt later in the inning, giving Western New England an 8-0 lead.

Tim Curtis generated the Dutchmen's lone run of the game with a two-out RBI single in the bottom of the ninth.

Marciano finished 2-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored and Colmenares went 2-for-4 with three RBI.

Union goes on the road to take on Elms College at 6 p.m., Wednesday, April 20.
