AUBURN, NY -- Devin Hayes allowed three hits in eight innings to lead Castleton University to a 3-1 victory over Union College in an NCAA Division III New York Regional Game at Falcon Park Thursday.
With the loss, the Dutchmen finished the season with a record of 26-14, tying the school record for victories in a season set in 2013 and tied in 2014. Union had appeared in the NCAA Regionals for the second time in three seasons. The Spartans advanced to Friday action in the tournament and improved to 33-11.
Hayes allowed one earned run and walked two while striking out nine. Michael LaBeau earned the save allowing one hit in the ninth inning. Dan Errico and Jim Buckley had two hits each.
Adam Ashenfarb went 7 1/3 innings and gave up just four hits and one earned run. He struck out six while walking two.
Kent Curran had two of Union's four hits and
Joe Ganim drove in the only run.
Castleton took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first. With one out Taylor Vile walked, and went to third on a single by Nick Swim. Errico then hit a sacrifice fly to center field for the RBI. Union tied it in the top of the second.
Eric Egan walked and stole second, and went to third on a sacrifice bunt by
Jamie Faber. Ganim then hit a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Egan and tying the game.
The Spartans took the lead for good in the fourth, as Dillon Benham was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and two outs. Castleton added insurance in the bottom of the eighth with another sacrifice fly. Mitchell Caron had a sacrifice fly with the bases loaded and two outs, bringing in Errico.
Union had four seniors in the 2016 season, Egan, Faber,
Mike Fitzsimmons and
Matt Yonta (who pitched 2/3 on an inning in the ninth) made up the winningest class in Union baseball history,
as the Dutchmen won 99 games and won two Liberty League Championships that produced the automatic bid to the NCAA playoffs.
