AMSTERDAM, N.Y—Senior left fielder
Eric Egan tied a season high with three RBI to lead the Union College baseball team to a 5-2 win against Middlebury Tuesday evening at Shuttleworth Park.
The Dutchmen improve to 18-12, while the Panthers go to 11-18.
Egan finished 2-for-4 with a double, a run scored and a stolen base to lead the Union offense.
Jake Fishman and
Harrison Glatt each contributed an RBI.
Middlebury took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when John Luke belted a solo home run to left field.
The Dutchmen answered with three runs in the third to take a 3-1 lead. Fishman tied the game with a an RBI double and Egan put Union in front with a two-run ground rule double down the left field line in the next at-bat.
Luke added his second RBI of the day in the top of the fifth, plating Garrett Werner with a sacrifice fly to right, but the Dutchmen piled on two more runs in the bottom of the eighth to pull away for good.
Jake Vesling led off the inning with a single and advanced to third after a
Devin Coffey sacrifice bunt and a Fishman groundout. Egan registered his third RBI of the day, legging out an infield single to score Vesling. Â
Egan advanced to third on a stolen base and an error before and Glatt drove him home with an RBI single to center, giving Union a 5-2 lead.
Vesling earned his first save of the season, allowing just one hit and striking out two over the final two innings.
Nick Williams was credited with the win, tossing three innings and allowing one earned run on three hits with one walk and two strikeouts.
Joe MacDonald took the loss on the mound for Middlebury, allowing five runs (four earned) on 10 hits while walking one and striking out two over eight innings.
Union takes on crosstown rival RPI in a non-league game Wednesday, May 4 at 4:30 p.m.
