Dutchmen shut out by league opponent RIT


ROCHESTER, NY - The  Union College men's soccer team closed out the 2017 regular season in a 3-0 loss to RIT (7-5-3, 5-2-2 Liberty League), Saturday.  With the win, RIT finished tied for third in the Liberty League standings. The Dutchmen do not contend for a playoff appearance.

Shots were 16-7 in favor of RIT. The Tigers took six corner kicks to three for the Dutchmen. Joey Gianakopoulos, Dean Kouroupas and Tyler Hatch each scored for RIT.  John Weitzman took the loss for Union, making seven saves.

RIT took a lead on a goal in the 39th minute. Gene Sicoli fired a shot that Weitzman saved. But, the rebound came to Gianakopoulos who shot first-time into the open net for the first goal of his collegiate career.

Kouroupas gave the Tigers the lead on his seventh goal of the season in the 50th minute. Simon Garno fed Kouroupas with a service that he fired past a diving Weitzman to give the Tigers a 2-0 lead. Hatch put the game away with his goal in the 88th minute. Nate Verso started the play with a drive up the middle of the pitch. He fed Connor Gill who spotted Hatch with a perfectly weighted pass. Hatch scored to give RIT a three-goal lead.

RIT is 5-0-2 in its last seven contests, outscoring its opponents 22-7 over that stretch. The Tigers have won three straight games, outscoring opponents 13-2 over that stretch. 

The Dutchmen concluded their season with this afternoon's game and ended the year with a 9-6-2 record overall, 1-6-2 in league play.
