SCHENECTADY, NY - With nearly identical records heading into tonight's match up, the Union College Dutchwomen (4-12-3) took the RIT Tigers to a thriller of a draw, with a 3-3 final score (4-14-3).
Through the first 12 minutes of the game, Union controlled much of the momentum. The Dutch earned a power play at the eight-minute mark, but ultimately were unable to capitalize.
Rachel de Perio headed to the penalty box with just two minutes to play in the first, for a tripping penalty, giving the Tigers their biggest opportunity of the night, thus far.
The Dutchwomen ended the second period unscathed, but still had to enter the second period playing a man-down for the remaining 14 seconds of de Perio's penalty.
After killing the first period penalty and returning to full strength, Union earned a power play of its own but once again, struggled to profit from the penalty.
With 10 minutes to go in the second, RIT's Claudia Black earned the puck off a battle against the boards. Black dished it to Tori Haywood, who was camped out in front of Union's net, and provided the wrist shot to upper left corner of the net, giving RIT the 1-0 lead. Less than three minutes later, Union went back to the penalty box for tripping. With the man-up advantage, RIT was able to score off a slap shot from the slot.
The Dutchwomen earned their third power play opportunity of the night at the 3:11 mark. Despite going 0-2 on power plays thus far on the night, senior Caitlyn McLaren was sure to benefit the third time around. The Ontario native scored her third goal of the season and cut Union's deficit in half.
RIT would strike again at 11:26 in the third period and make the game look out of reach. However, the Dutchwomen refused to give in.
After a timeout, the Dutchwomen pulled goaltender Kate Spooner and would go on to score back-to-back goals with the six to five skater advantage. Haley Shugart netted the first of the two, and less than 30 seconds later, Megan Ryan rifled the puck in past RIT's netminder.Â
With the electric surge, the Dutchwomen forced the Tigers into overtime, but the scoring would end there at three goals apiece.
Union takes on RIT tomorrow for an afternoon rematch at 3 p.m.
