Lyons, Barra lead Senior Day game vs. William Smith

SCHENECTADY, NY – Sophomore forward Mia Morrison scored a game high 18 points and tied the game high of seven rebounds to lead William Smith College to a 70-61 Liberty League women's basketball victory over host Union College at the Viniar Atheltic Center Sunday afternoon.

The Herons improved to 17-8 to finish the regular season and hosts a Liberty League Semifinal playoff game Wednesday after finishing 11-5 in league play. The Dutchwomen finish the season 12-12 and 8-8 in league play.

It was Senior Day for the Dutchwomen as Krystal Edwards, Abby Katz, Natalie Leone and Erin Lyons played in their final game for Union.

Melanie Patterson scored 12 and Alyssa DiCampli added 11 for the Herons, who shot 44% for the game including 50% in the second period. Gabrielle Eure added six rebounds for the guests, who had a 44-36 rebounding advantage for the game.

Lyons and junior Jenni Barra led the Dutchwomen with 17 points each and Lyons had seven boards. Barra had a season high in scoring. Sophie Borg scored 11 and added five rebounds and Leone had nine in her finale. Union shot 36%.

William Smith had a 21-14 lead after the first quarter, making 47% of the shots. The largest lead in the period was 10 at 17-7 with 4:21 to play. The Herons were also up by 10 with 5:03 left in the first half after a layup by Kendra Quinn-Moultrie. But the Dutchwomen got to within two at 32-30 with 1:28 left after a Barra three pointer. It was 39-32 Herons at halftime.

William Smith led by nine at 43-34 with 7:43 left in the third after a DiCampli three but back came Union to make it a three point game at 43-40 with six minutes left after a Barra three. But it was 52-47 William Smith entering the fourth.

Union was as close as three at 56-53 with 6:54 after a Lyons jumper, but the Herons pulled away for a 70-60 lead with 26 seconds remaining.

This was Union's seventh straight non-losing season and 17th in the last 18 seasons under Coach Mary Ellen Burt.
