CANTON, NY -- Senior Deshon Burgess hit a three pointer with 0.9 seconds remaining in the second overtime to lift the Union College men's basketball team to a 110-108 victory over St. Lawrence University in a Liberty League semifinal game Wednesday night at Burkman Gymnasium. Union is now 15-10 and the Saints finished 20-6.
With the #3 seed Dutchmen defeating the #2 seed Saints, Union awaited word for the other semifinal contest, which had started one hour later. Top seed Skidmore lost to #4 seed Hobart, 70-65. Thus, Union, in the Championship Game for the first time since the 2005-06 season, will host the Statesmen Saturday at the Viniar Athletic Center. Game time is to be announced.
Burgess scored 34 points, which tied his career high set earlier this season vs. Vassar. Greg King set a new career points high with 21 and tied his rebounding career high with 11. Wade McNamara added 16 and Kevin Weckworth scored 15.
Riley Naclerio led the Saints scoring 34 points and grabbing 15 rebounds. Seniors Kyle Edwards and Willie Zachery both tallied 22 points in their final game. The Saints shot 57 percent from the field while holding Union to 47% as the lead changed 26 times in the double overtime finish.
The Dutchmen got a head start on the Saints accumulating a 12 point lead at the 3:48 mark of the first half. St. Lawrence battled back with a rebound and put back from Ben Crawford and a three pointer from Edwards to end the first half. Union held a 50-42 lead at half time.
The Saints came out of the locker room posting their first lead of the game (55-53) with 14:38 remaining in the second half. With 14 of the 26 lead changes happening in the second half, both teams competed for the lead down the stretch. Union held the one point advantage off a three pointer from Kevin Weckworth with 40 seconds remaining in the half, that point was matched with a free throw from Chris Miner to end the second half 91-91. St. Lawrence held a three point lead (99-96) with 1:55 remaining in the first overtime but the game was tied up at the 18 second mark with a three pointer from King. With his squad trailing by one, Burgess nailed the game winner.
