Babson pulls out 9-8 OT win over Union

BABSON PARK, MA — Senior Francesca Giovanucci converted a feed from junior Charlotte O'Halloran 2:05 into overtime to lift Babson College to a 9-8 win over visiting Union College in non-conference women's lacrosse action on Thursday at MacDowell Field. With its second consecutive win, Babson is now 3-2 on the year, while Union slips to 1-3 overall.

Senior Emily Bresnahan finished with three goals and one assist, while Giovanucci scored twice for the Beavers. Senior Katie McKenna contributed three draw controls and three caused turnovers, and junior Julia Harrigan added three ground balls, three draw controls and two caused turnovers in the victory.

Seniors Jackie Hagopian and Natalie Sullivan both scored three goals for the Dutchwomen. Sullivan also caused three turnovers and junior Caitlin Hullinger tied for game-high honors with three ground balls.

Union built a 2-0 lead less than five minutes into the contest before the Green and White responded with seven of the next nine goals. Bresnahan and sophomore Mairead Williams scored just 1:23 apart to tie the game, and Giovanucci capped a three-goal spurt that gave the Beavers a 5-3 advantage with 15:13 to go in the opening half. The Dutchwomen pulled within a goal on sophomore Emma Lowery's free-position strike, but Bresnahan and first-year Taylor Herrmann quickly answered to extend the Babson lead to 7-4 at the break.

Sullivan scored twice and Hagopian notched her second goal of the game to tie the game at 7-7 just 6:24 into the second half before the pace slowed for both teams. The Beavers went back in front on sophomore Olivia McCahan's goal with 5:56 to go in regulation, only to see Union net the equalizer on a free-position marker by Hagopian with eight seconds left to force overtime. After trading turnovers in the first 75 seconds of the extra session, the Green and White gained possession of the ball and were successful on the clear to set up Giovanucci's game winner.

First-year goaltender Olivia Phelan made six saves for Babson, while senior Jen Hughes turned away 10 shots for the Dutchwomen. The Beavers held a 27-17 edge in shots and a slim 10-9 advantage in draw controls.

Union opens the Liberty League schedule on March 31 at Vassar at 4 p.m.
