Vassar offense too much for Dutchmen in sweep

AMSTERDAM, N.Y.—Vassar scored 24 runs over two games to complete the Liberty League weekend sweep of the Union College baseball team, Saturday afternoon at Shuttleworth Park. The Brewers took game one 10-5, and won game two 14-8.

The Dutchmen go to 11-10 overall and 7-5 in the Liberty League, while the Brewers move to 10-12 overall and 4-5 in league play.

In game one, Vassar starting pitcher Trent Berg scattered 11 hits and one walk while striking out four in the complete-game win.

Kent Curran led the Union offense, going 2-for-4 with two home runs, two RBI and two runs scored. Matt Catalfo was 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored, and Anthony Amoroso and Zack Twitchell were each 2-for-3.

Vassar took a 2-0 lead two batters into the game when Bobby Kinne launched a two-run home run to right field.  Matt Martino doubled the lead three batters later with a fly ball that had just enough distance to clear the right field wall.

The Dutchmen chipped away at the deficit in the bottom half of the inning, scoring two runs on three hits.  Matt Catalfo hit a leadoff double down the left field line and later scored on a double play ball and Kent Curran ripped a solo home run to right.

Union came within one in the third, as Joe Ganim scored from third while Twitchell was caught in a rundown, but that's as close at it would get.

The Brewers erupted for five runs in the fifth, four of which came on a Denis Shanagher grand slam, and Bryan Rubin delivered a two-run double in the sixth to make it 10-3.

Ganim and Curran each hit a solo home run in the sixth and seventh inning, respectively, for the 10-5 final.

Union starter Tim Curtis took the loss, allowing four runs on two hits in two innings of work.

The Brewers jumped out to a 6-0 lead in game two, scoring two runs in the first, one in the second and three in the third.

Evan Trausch opened the scoring in the first with a bases-loaded single and Matt Martino drew a walk one batter later. Trausch produced his second RBI of the game with a sacrifice fly in the second and Matt Hernandez made it 4-0 with an RBI groundout in the third. The Brewers tacked on two more runs in the frame on an RBI single by Shanagher and a throwing error.

Vassar added five runs in the fifth on back-to-back bases-loaded singles by Trausch and Martino, a two-out, two-run double by Tyler Smach and a wild pitch. Schwartz extended the lead to 12-0 with a solo home run in the sixth.

First-year Tim Burnes finally got Union on the board in the bottom half of the inning, ripping a two-run double to right-center. Colin Kelly hit a two-run double three batters later, plating Jack Myers and Burnes.

The Brewers scored single runs in the seventh and eighth innings before Myers produced the Dutchmen's fifth run of the game with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the eighth.

Union threatened in the bottom of the ninth, scoring three runs on two throwing errors. The Dutchmen loaded the bases, but Robert Pinataro got Colin Kelly to fly out to end the game.

Schwartz led the way for the Brewers, finishing 4-fo-6 with an RBI and three runs scored. Trausch was 3-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored, and Smach was 2-for-3 with two RBI. Joe Conti earned the win on the mound, allowing four runs on seven hits over six innings.

Dutchmen starter Adam Ashenfarb was tagged with the loss after allowing six runs (five earned) on six hits, while walking five and striking out four over three innings.

Union returns to action Wednesday, April 19 with a non-conference game at Williams.
