Dutchwomen swept by Utica

SCHENECTADY, NY -- Britttany Meka and Alyssa Samborin pitched complete game victories to lead Utica College to a sweep in non-league softball action at Union College's Alexander Field Tuesday. The Pioneers won the opener, 5-0, and took the nightcap, 10-2, to improve to 12-14 on the season. The Dutchwomen now stand 4-16.

Meka allowed just one hit in the seven inning complete game shutout, a leadoff single by Kim Puzo in the fifth inning. She had a perfect game through four innings and retired the final eight batters, pitching to the minimum 21 including a double play in that fifth inning. Meka improved to 8-4 and struck out five. Utica scored two in the first featuring an RBI double by Hayley Fredericks and scored three in the seventh led by a two run, two out single by Nicole Rice. Rice had three hits on the day and Fredericks and Jamie Miller had two each for Utica.

Union's Dana Dolinko also pitched a complete game, giving up eight hits and one earned run while walking one batter.

Samborin got her first win with a four hitter, fiving up two earned runs and striking out three while walking two. Miller was four for four with two RBIs while Fredericks had three hits and four RBIs for the Pioneers. Rice drove in two with two hits in the 15 hit performance in game two. Union scored twice in the first and Kayla Fisher had two hits and a stolen base for the Dutchwomen. Fredericks' two run single in the fifth tied it at 2-2, and Utica sent eight batters to the plate and scored four runs in both the sixth and seventh innings. Rice had a two run single in the five hit sixth inning and the Pioneers had four hits in the seventh.

Union is right back in action Wednesday to play another non-league doubleheader. This will be the first road games (other then the neutral site games in March in Florida), as the Dutchwomen play at Sage Colleges at 3:30 p.m.
