Baseball rallies for 4-3 win against Plattsburgh

AMSTERDAM, N.Y.—First-year infielder Sean Cullen scored on a throwing error in the bottom of the eighth inning and Bill Christopher collected his fourth save to help the Union College baseball team to a 4-3 come-from-behind win against Plattsburgh State, Wednesday night at Shuttleworth Park.

The Dutchmen, who extend their winning streak to six,  go to 17-10, while the Cardinals move to 10-20.

Plattsburgh opened the scoring in the top of the third when Kentaro Mori hit a two-out RBI single up the middle, plating Noah Clark. The Cardinals tacked on two more runs in the third, scoring on a sacrifice bunt and an infield single.

Mori and Billy Rombauts drew back-to-back walks to start the inning before advancing to second and third, respectively, on a sacrifice bunt. Jon Craft brought in the first run of the frame with another sacrifice bunt and Jordan Godfrey drove in Rombauts with a high-bouncing single to make it 3-0.

The Dutchmen finally got on the board in the bottom half of the inning, rallying to tie the game. Jake Vesling singled and advanced to second on a Kent Curran groundout. The Cardinals nearly recorded the third out of the inning, but a throwing error on a play at first put Cullen on second and allowed Vesling to score.

Andy Labeck delivered an RBI single to right field in Union's next at-bat and later moved to second on a wild pitch. Colin Kelly produced the game-tying right one batter later, ripping an RBI double off the wall in left-center.

Another error in the bottom of the eighth proved to be the difference, as Cullen scored from first on an errant throw by the third basemen.

Christopher retired the Cardinals in order in the top of the ninth to seal the win and register his fourth save of the season. Nick Williams picked up his first win, tossing one shutout inning. Starting pitcher Tim Curtis went five innings, scattering one run on four hits and three walks while striking out one.

Plattsburgh starter Mitch Crispens tossed five and two-thirds shutout innings, allowing one run (0 earned) on three hits with three strikeouts. Brantley Marion was tagged with the loss after surrendering one run over the final two and one-third innings.

The Dutchmen return to Liberty League play this Saturday when they open a four-game series at Clarkson.
