Baseball Takes Two From Rochester

AMSTERDAM, NY -- In two games against University of Rochester, the Union College baseball team never trailed on Saturday afternoon at Shuttleworth Park in Amsterdam, NY.

In game one, the Dutchmen were paced by a strong start on the mound by Jake Vesling who went 5 2/3 innings striking out four. Vesling was able to keep the ball on the ground recording nine ground ball outs.

After the Union lead was trimmed to 4-3, manager Paul Mound turned to Bill Christopher to close out the game. After the Dutchmen tacked on their fifth run of the game in the bottom of the sixth, Christopher shut down the Yellowjackets in the top of the seventh not allowing a hit over the inning and a third that he pitched. Union grabbed game one by a final of 5-3.

In game two, the Dutchmen were powered by their offense which scored in the first seven frames en route to a 14-2 victory over Rochester.

Ryan Kuchar picked up his first win of the 2017 campaign after pitching six innings allowing just three hits and striking out six Yellowjacket hitters. Union hung crooked numbers in the first three innings of the game to jump out to a commanding 8-0 lead.

On the flip side, Rochester did not plate a run until the game was in the eighth inning. By that time, the game was already 14-0 in favor of the Dutchmen.

Union and Rochester will be back at Shuttleworth Park tomorrow for another doubleheader. Game one is scheduled to start at noon while game two will start approximately 30 minutes after the conclusion of game one.
