Clarkson ousts Union in extra innings

ROCHESTER, N.Y.— Junior Ben Knauf hit a two-out RBI single in the top of the 12th inning and later scored on a throwing error, lifting Clarkson to a 6-4 win against the Union College baseball team in a Liberty League Tournament elimination game, Friday afternoon at Tiger Stadium.
 
With the win, the Golden Knights (18-17) will face host RIT in the Liberty League Championship.
 
Clarkson opened the scoring  in the top of the third when Chris Miller laced an RBI single through the right side, but Union answered with a single run of its own in the bottom half of the frame.
 
Sean Cullen hit a leadoff and advanced to third after a back-to-back ground outs. Anthony Amoroso followed with an RBI single up the middle, tying the game at 1-1.
 
The Dutchmen struck again in the fifth, loading the bases with three straight singles. Jake Vesling gave Union its first lead with an RBI single, but Matt Catalfo was thrown out at home on the play to end the inning.
 
The Golden Knights pulled back in front in the seventh, pushing across three runs to take a 4-2 lead. Knauf scored on a throwing error to tie the game and Brett Pearson hit a two-out RBI single, scoring Miller.
 
Union battled back in the bottom half of the inning with two runs of its own.  Sam Kirschenbaum drew a walk and advanced to third after a Catalfo single and a fielder's choice. Vesling ripped an RBI single to left field, scoring Kirschenbaum, to cut the deficit to one, and Curran delivered an RBI single in the next at-bat to make it 4-4.
 
The Dutchmen threatened in the bottom of the ninth, putting a runner at first and second with one out. Ryan Riley managed to work out of the jam, forcing Vesling to line out and Curran to fly out to end the inning.
 
After a scoreless 10th and 11th, the Golden Knights managed to produce the final runs of the game in the 12th. Dom Pirro hit a leadoff single and advanced to third after a wild pitch and a groundout. Union reliever Nick Williams got Cam Bando to pop out in the next at-bat, but Knauf followed with RBI single. He then stole second and an errant throw on the play allowed him to advance to third. A throwing error on a Ruiz-Sierra grounder allowed Knauf to score, giving Clarkson the 6-4 lead.
 
Reilly struck out two batters and forced a groundout in the bottom of the inning to earn the win for the Golden Knights. He allowed no runs and just three hits while striking out five and walking none over the final five innings.
 
Williams suffered the loss for Union, scattering two runs (one earned) on five hits and two walks while striking out four. Starting pitcher Ryan Kuchar tossed six and two-thirds innings, surrendering four runs (two earned) on seven hits.
 
The Dutchmen recorded their fifth consecutive 20-win season, finishing the campaign with an overall record of 21-15.
