Baseball takes two from RPI on Senior Day

AMSTERDAM, N.Y.—Senior outfielder Kent Curran produced a season-high four RBI in a 9-5 come-from-behind win against Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute  (RPI), leading the Union College baseball team to a doubleheader sweep on Senior Day, Saturday afternoon at Shuttleworth Park. Union won the opening game 7-1, clinching a berth in the four-team Liberty League conference tournament.

The Dutchmen improve to 20-12 overall, marking their fifth consecutive 20-win season, and 14-6 in the Liberty League, while the Engineers go to 17-21 overall and 9-11 in conference play.

In game one, Union opened the scoring in the bottom of the first when Sean Cullen drove a two-out RBI single through the left side. The Dutchmen continued to build on the lead in the second, piling on six runs to take a 7-0 lead.

Three straight singles, including an RBI single by Zack Twitchell, pushed across the first run of the frame. Andy Labeck ripped a two-out, three run double off the wall in left to keep in the inning alive, and Kent Curran lifted a home run to right field to make it 7-0.

The Engineers finally got to Union starting pitcher Jake Vesling in the fifth inning when Justin Valente hit a solo home run to left field, but that would prove to be their final hit of the game.

Vesling went the distance for the Dutchmen, scattering one run on five hits with one walk while striking out six to improve to 5-2.

RPI starter Patrick McMackin was tagged with the loss after allowing three runs on four hits over one and one-third innings.

The Engineers rebounded quickly in game two, scoring three runs in the top of the first. Ethann Meister started the charge with a leadoff home run to left. Weston Hawkins made it 2-0 with an RBI groundout before scoring two batters later on Sean Welling's two-out single to right field.

The Dutchmen chipped away at the deficit in the bottom half of the frame with a sacrifice fly from Curran, but Meister restored the three-run lead in the top of the third, belting his second solo home run of the game to make it 4-1.

Union continued to battle back, eventually tying the game with a single run in the third and two runs in the fourth. In the third, Curran drilled a leadoff double to center field and advanced to second when Sean Cullen was hit by a pitch. Joe Ganim brought Curran home one batter later with an RBI single.

A fielder's choice and a throwing error in the fourth put Matt Catalfo and Zack Twitchell at first and second, respectively. Anothony Amoroso singled through the right side in the next at-bat, plating Twitchell, and a throwing error on the play allowed Catalfo to score the tying run.

The Dutchmen pulled away for good in the fifth, pushing across five runs to take a 9-4 lead. Jake Vesling drew a bases loaded walk to give Union its first lead of the game and Curran cleared the bases in the next at-bat, ripping a triple to deep center field.

Justin Valente pulled one back for the Engineers in the top of the seventh with a solo homerun to left, but that's as close as it would get. Nick Williams pitched three shutout innings in relief with four strikeouts and no walks, securing the 9-5 win for his second save of the season.

Union starting pitcher Ryan Kuchar improve to 4-3, striking out four and allowing five runs (three earned) on 11 hits over six innings.

Mike Paleologopoulos was tagged with the loss for RPI after surrendering four runs (three earned) on one hit over two and one third innings.

Prior to the doubleheader, Union honored the three members of its senior class: Adam Ashenfarb, Kent Curran and Greg Geisel.

Union and RPI close out the regular season on Sunday with a doubleheader at Robinson Field. First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m.
