Marissa Tarashuk scored on a penalty shot in the second overtime and first year goalkeeper
Heather Poisson made 19 saves to lead Union College to a 2-1 non-league field hockey victory over Castleton University Friday at Frank Bailey Field. It was the season opener for both teams.
Tarashuk scored with 10:10 remaining in the second extra period. Poisson, in her first career collegiate contest, made nine saves in overtime, including numerous back-to-back stops and some on breakaways. Union had a 29-24 shot advantage, while Tashia Pashby-Rockwood made 13 saves for the visitors. Union also had a 14-12 advantage in penalty corners.
Castleton scored the lone goal of the first half. Sarah Wells tipped in a drive from Allison Lowell on the left doorstep at 29:07. At 50:07, the Dutchwomen tied it on Katerine Talacci's goal, assisted by another first year players,
Abigail Torgerson. The goalies kept both teams at bay for nearly 40 more minutes.
Torgerson had five of her seven shots on goal for the Dutchwomen while Wells had all seven of her game high shots on net.
Union is back in action September 9 at Wheaton at 12:00 p.m.
