SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – A red card in the 56th minute sealed the fate for the Union College women's soccer team, as the Dutchwomen were forced to compete a player short for the remainder of the game in an eventual 3-0 loss to Plattsburgh State on Tuesday night at College Park Field.
The loss is the first on the season for the Dutchwomen, who are now 2-1 on the year. It was also the first contest that Union goalkeeper
Kelsey Hartsoe conceded a goal. The Cardinals scored their first goal in the 65th minute, ending Hartsoe's season opening shutout streak at 244 minutes.
Both sides played to a relative stalemate through the first 55 minutes of the contest, but Union's
Aly Leahy was given a red card after tackling a Plattsburgh State forward on a breakaway.
Despite it being a scoreless affair at the time of the booking, Union was unable to keep the clean sheet much longer as the now more numerous Cardinals went on the attack. Plattsburgh State scored in the 65th, 83rd, and 84th, minutes to cap off the 3-0 win.
Katie Monahan and
Sydney Keane both had one shot on goal for the Dutchwomen. In net, Hartsoe made 11 saves, including eight in the second half.
Union will hit the road for the first time this season, taking on the University of Rochester on Saturday. The match in Rochester is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. (ET), and will be the lone competition for the Dutchwomen over the weekend.
