Dutchwomen can't hang onto Thoroughbreds

SCHENECTADY, NY – Despite trailing Skidmore by just one point midway through the third quarter, Union eventually fell to the Thoroughbreds 66-38. The loss drops Union to 2-8 in conference play, and sets their overall record at 5-11.

Senior guard Jenni Barra got things going early on with superior decision making, as she created plays for her teammates. Barra notched two assists early on in the game, setting the Dutchwomen up 4-2 with 7 minutes left in the first quarter. She continued to be a persistent presence all over the court as she nailed a deep three pointer and got the ensuing offensive rebound to give Union the possession, up 7-6 with three minutes left in the first quarter.

It was a hard-fought contest throughout, and the game was tied at 15 apiece with 5:21 left to go in the first half. Skidmore was able to pull away somewhat, as Union trailed 18-25 at the conclusion of the first half. Sophomore center Alexa Morin led Union in field goal percentage and points per minute in the first half, shooting 66% from the field and averaging 0.57 points per minute.

To no one's surprise, Barra got the Dutch back in the game early by firing a three pointer after the first 20 seconds of the first half. She later weaved through traffic to score a nice under-handed layup that contributed to cutting the Skidmore lead to one point, as Union trailed 24-25 with 7 minutes left in the third quarter.

The one point lead was the closest Union would get for the rest of the game, due in large part to the ensuing scoring barrage Skidmore put on that resulted in a 43-28 lead at the start of the fourth quarter.

Union takes on Ithaca tomorrow afternoon for a 2 p.m. (ET) tip off back at the Viniar Athletic Center.
