Volleyball Takes Down Oneonta to Begin Oswego Quad

OSWEGO, N.Y. – Sophomore Julia Louis hit a stellar .733 to lead the Union College women's volleyball team to a 3-1 (20-25, 25-15, 25-18, 25-13) win over SUNY Oneonta on day one of the Oswego State Quad, held at Max Ziel Gymnasium on Friday night.

Louis had a big day at the net for Union (11-8), putting down 11 kills on 15 errorless attempts while also recording a match-high four blocks. Sophomore Gillian Gore tied for the match high with 13 kills on 26 attempts, while classmate Lara Atalay added 12 kills. Sophomores Kaylee Velasquez and Sage Shimamoto added a match-best 18 digs and 42 assists, respectively, as well.

After dropping the first set, Union never trailed in the second stanza to even the match. The team led by as many as 12 points after six straight points gave the Dutchwomen their first set point, and a Red Dragon service error finally gave the frame to Union.

In the third set, Oneonta held a 14-11 lead before Union made its move, scoring seven straight points to take an 18-14 advantage, helped by three straight Atalay aces and two kills and a block from Gore. Holding a 20-18 lead, Union scored five straight points to take a 2-1 lead.

The Dutchwomen closed out the match with an efficient fourth frame, putting down 14 kills on only 28 attempts. Gore and Louis led the team with four kills each in the set. Up 18-13, Union closed with seven straight points to finish up the set and the match.

Union will be back on the court tomorrow for two more matches, taking on host Oswego and St. John Fisher College at noon and 2 p.m., respectively.
