SAUGERTIES, N.Y. – Sophomore
Megan Brown earned her first collegiate victory at first singles to lead the Union College women's tennis team to its first Liberty League win of the season with a 7-2 victory over Bard College on Tuesday night at Total Tennis.
Nine different players earned a victory for Union (1-2, 1-2 Liberty League) on the evening, as the Dutchwomen took two of the three doubles matches before capturing five of the six singles matches.
Union started the match with a pair of close doubles victories. At first doubles, junior
Tal Pezzuco and senior
Paige Webster took down Bard's Katie Esposito and Katri Shields, 8-6, while junior
Sarah Collins and sophomore
Nicole Cornell picked up and 8-5 win at third singles. For Cornell, it is the first dual match victory of her collegiate career.
In singles play, sophomore
Samantha Siegel earned her first career dual match win with a 6-2, 6-4 victory at second singles, followed by a 6-2, 6-2 win for classmate
Cathy Xing at third singles. The clinching victory went to fellow sophomore
Alissa Sangiuolo, who earned a 6-1, 6-1 win in her fifth-singles match.
Brown added to the Union win total with a hard-fought 7-5, 7-6 (7-4) win at the first-singles flight, followed by junior
Allison Remmell at sixth singles with a tough 6-4, 7-5 win to complete the match.
The victory will carry Union into the offseason, as the Dutchwomen are finished with their 2018 fall slate. The team is scheduled to be back to competition on March 2, 2019 against Smith College.
