CANTON, N.Y. – The Union College football team picked up its first Liberty League victory of the season, topping St. Lawrence 29-7 on Saturday afternoon at Leckonby Stadium.
 
The Dutchmen improve to 5-2 on the season with a 1-2 record in Liberty League play, while St. Lawrence drops to 2-5 with a 1-1 record in the Liberty League.
 
Union kept St. Lawrence to just 199 yards of total offense, which includes a season best of just 24 yards rushing against. It also marks just the second time this season that Union has kept its opponent under 200 yards.
 
How It Happened
The Dutchmen started the contest with strong defense, forcing a fumble on the first play which put St. Lawrence on their one-yard line. On the ensuing play, George Reed broke through the line and tackled SLY running back Tyler Grochot in the endzone for the safety and 2-0 lead.
 
Union would go on to score 13 more points in the first quarter, as Will Bellamy connected with Andre Ross Jr. for a 5-yard TD on Union's first possession of the game, and Marcos Rodriguez made two 29-yard field goals to give Union the 15-0 lead after 15 minutes.
 
In the second quarter, Bellamy and Ross Jr. combined again for Union's second touchdown of the day, this time with the first year hauling in a 17-yard pass to put Union up 22-0.
 
The two teams would then settle into a defensive battle for the third quarter and half of the fourth, but St. Lawrence finally got on the board at the 7:12 mark of the final quarter with a 7-yard pass. The Dutchmen then responded with a 45-yard drive, capped off by a 2-yard TD run by Derek Khnaizir, to secure the 29-7 win.
