SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – The Union College women's volleyball team dropped a 3-0 (25-19, 25-11, 28-26) decision to Morrisville State College in the final home match of the regular season on Friday night at Viniar Athletic Center.
The night marked the final collegiate home contest for Union's three seniors –
Caroline Everts,
Emma Sprotbery and
Alaina Thaxter – who were recognized before the match. Thaxter finished with four kills, two digs and a block on the night, Everts recorded five digs, while Sprotbery added three kills, four aces and eight digs.
Sophomore
Lara Atalay led the team with 11 kills, followed by classmate
Steph Libonati with seven.
The first set was incredibly even at the outset, with the two teams alternating 15 straight points to give Morrisville a slight 10-8 lead early on. But the Mustangs used that 10th point to start a 10-5 run that put the visitors in control of the opening frame. The Dutchmen then struggled in the second stanza, recording only seven kills while Morrisville put down 18 kills to take a 2-0 lead.
Morrisville jumped to an early 10-4 lead in the third set, but Union bounced back with a 12-5 stretch to take a 16-15 advantage and the lead never grew larger than two for either side the rest of the way. Union fought off a pair of match points after falling behind 24-22 thanks to kills from Atalay and Libonati, then had a pair of set points but could not convert. Trailing 26-25, Morrisville came back with two kills and a Union error to clinch the sweep.
Union will close out the 2018 season tomorrow with two matches at Skidmore College, with the Dutchwomen taking on Lasell College at noon and SUNY Potsdam at 2 p.m.
