Field Hockey Sends Seniors Off with a Win

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – The Union College field hockey team sent off its seniors with a convincing 6-1 victory over Oswego State in the 2018 season finale on a rainy Saturday afternoon at Frank Bailey Field at Bertagna-Class of 1985 Stadium.

In their final collegiate game, seniors Lindsay Barson, Hannah Christian, Allison Cosentino and Alexa Puleio all made contributions to the Union cause. Christian scored a goal, Cosentino and Puleio recorded assists, and Barson added her team-leading seventh defensive save.

In all, six different players scored for Union (8-9), which bookended its season with three-game winning streaks thanks to the victory. Junior Charlotte Leyland and sophomore Katie Talacci both had a team-leading two points in the win with a goal and an assist each, while sophomores Cici Lyne, Abby Stack and Laura Wind all scored as well for the home team.

Union wasted little time getting on the scoreboard, as Lyne tapped in a Leyland pass at the back post just 1:17 into the contest. The Dutchwomen then scored twice in 60 seconds to take a 3-0 lead, when Wind scored off her own rebound at 12:52 and Leyland added her team-leading 13th goal of the year at the 13:52 mark. Stack kept the offense coming in the 22nd minute, corralling a Leyland rebound and finding the net.

The home team added two more goals in the second half to put the game away. Talacci scored her eighth of the year in the 44th minute off a pass from Puleio, and the final Union goal of the season came appropriately from a pair of seniors, as Cosentino found Christian for her third goal of the year at the 52:42 mark.

Union finished the game with a 16-12 edge in shots, but many of the Oswego chances came later in the contest after the outcome had already been decided. Sophomore Heather Poisson made three saves in the first 35 minutes to earn the win, while classmate Mary Beth Rudolf turned away five of the six shots she faced in the second half.
