ONEONTA, N.Y. – The Union College field hockey team had an edge on the stat sheet at the half, but the Dutchwomen could not capitalize on their chances and Hartwick College responded with a strong second half to pick up a 4-0 win on Wednesday evening at Wright Stadium.
Union (3-6) outshot Hartwick (7-3) by a 10-4 margin and had eight corners to the home team's two in the opening 35 minutes of play, keeping the pressure on the Hawks' defensive unit. But the visitors could not break through, thanks in part to five saves from Allyson Osborne, and Perry Willett scored the only goal of the first half at the 12:58 mark.
Holding a 1-0 lead at the half, Hartwick then scored three times in the second stanza to secure the victory. Willett netted her second of the game in the 44th minute just seconds after sophomore
Mary Beth Rudolf denied a penalty stroke attempt, and the Hawks added two more later in the half.
Union finished the game with a 13-12 edge in shots, led by a game-high seven from junior
Charlotte Leyland. Rudolf made three saves and junior
Quinn Relihan added a defensive save as well for the Dutchwomen as well.
Union will return to Liberty League action on Saturday with a stiff test, as the team hosts NFHCA #6 University of Rochester beginning at 1 p.m. at Frank Bailey Field.
