SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – The Union College women's hockey team fell to Mercyhurst, 5-2, Monday afternoon at Messa Rink.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Sophomore forward Sierra Lee gave Union a 1-0 edge 16:47 into the opening period with a goal at the far post from close range off assists from junior forwards Haley Shugart and Rachel de Perio.
- The Lakers tied the game nine minutes into the second period, and took the lead less than two minutes later.
- With 1:21 remaining in the second period, Union had a chance to tie the game after sophomore Helen Markovic was taken down on a breakaway chance. Lee stepped up to take the ensuing penalty shot and fired it just wide of the right post.
- Less than a minute later, the visitors added another goal in the final minute of the period to take a 3-1 advantage into the final frame.
- Mercyhurst scored two goals late in the third period to take a 5-1 lead. The Dutchwomen got their second goal of the game with 1:48 remaining in regulation when first-year forward Grace Heiting scored her second goal of the season on assists from sophomore defenseman Megan Ryan and first-year forward Maia Martinez, who accounted for her first point in a Union sweater.
- In her first start of the season, junior goaltender Kate Spooner tied her career-high with 45 saves. She also turned away 45 shots against Clarkson on January 28, 2017.
