SCHENECTADY, NY - The Dutchwomen fell to Quinnipiac University, 4-2 this evening, during the team's annual mental health awareness game.
Quinnipiac took control of today's contest immediately, manning the puck in front of Union's own for the majority of the first period.
With 8:26 to go in the first, a Union penalty gave the Bobcats the man-up advantage. Just 15 seconds into the power play, Quinnipiac scored and took its first lead of the game. Bobcat Kati Tabin took a one-timer and teammate Sarah-Eve Coutu-Godbout helped redirect the shot past netminder, Amelia Murray.
Trailing in the second period, Union earned a power play of its own with 14:48 to go. Senior Brandy Streeter won a battle off the boards, with help from Rachel de Perio. de Perio passed the puck off to Katelynn Russ who sailed the puck right over goalie Abbie Ives' head, to tie the game up.
Quinnipiac regained its lead with about 10 minutes left to play in the second. Just 24 seconds apart, the Bobcats would score back-to-back goals and run into the third period with a 3-1 advantage.
The Bobcats scored again in the ultimate period, seemingly solidifying victory over the Dutch. However, with under two minutes to go, and Murray pulled, it appeared as if first year Helen Markovic had scored. But, after review, the call was reversed and Union still trailed 4-1 with the clock ticking down.
With 48.2 seconds left in the game, Russ would net her second goal of the game, but that would do it for the matchup with the Bobcats.
Quinnipiac owned shots on goal, with 41-24 at the end of 60 minutes.
Union hits the road next weekend for a pair of ECAC games at Harvard and Dartmouth.
