TROY, NY – The Union College baseball team dropped two games of a doubleheader, 10-2 and 9-6, to RIT on Friday afternoon at Lansingburgh High School.
The Tigers had a seven-run inning in the first game and a five-run inning in the second to take the opening games of Liberty League play for the two teams. RIT improves to 5-3 (2-0 LL) on the season, while Union falls to 6-4 (0-2 LL).
Union scored the first run of the day, as
Jake Vesling hit a single up the middle to score
Jack Koch in the first inning of game one. Unfortunately, RIT scored seven runs in the fourth to take a 7-1 lead. Despite Union getting one run back in the bottom of the frame, thanks to a
Sam Kirschenbaum homer, the Tigers added three more runs before the end of seven innings to secure the 10-2 win.
In game two, the RIT got on the board first, stringing together two runs on three hits in the first. However, this time Union answered to tie the game up in the bottom of the second.
Colin Kelly led off with his second home run of the season, and a double by
Zack Twitchell allowed
Will Bellamy to score for the 2-2 tie.
A lone run in the third gave the Tigers back the lead, but Union kept up its hot hitting and jumped out to a 5-3 lead in the bottom of the inning. A wild pitch and a passed ball allowed Koch and
Anthony Amoroso to score before
Sean Cullen hit his second homer of the season to put Union up by three.
The Tigers answered back in the fourth, scoring five runs to take back the lead before adding an insurance run in the sixth for a 9-6 advantage. RIT was able to keep the Dutchmen without a hit in the final two innings to secure the doubleheader sweep.
Union and RIT will return to the diamond at Lansingburgh High School for another Liberty League doubleheader tomorrow, March 31, beginning at noon (ET).
