SCHENECTADY, NY -- Union took the first half of a doubleheader with Skidmore this afternoon, to clinch a playoff berth to the Liberty League Championships beginning this Thursday.
The Dutchwomen defeated the Thoroughbreds 4-3, in a walk off fashion, during game one before falling 4-2 in the latter half of the day.Â
GAME ONE
Skidmore jumped on the board in the top of the first when Hannah Paolucci had an RBI single. In the bottom of the second, Skidmore walked Nikki Ditzio with the bases loaded and brought
Kayla Fisher around to settle the score at 1-1.
Thoroughbred Nicole Rosner later doubled to score two runs and advance Skidmore's lead to 3-1. Down by two in the bottom of the fourth, the Dutchwomen's bats came to life as
Stuart Buxton doubled to left to score one run and leave two runners in scoring position.
Dana Dolinko followed up with a sac fly to center field that gave Ditizio enough room to reach home safely and tie up the game.Â
Union and Skidmore were tied at three runs apiece in the bottom of the seventh as the Dutch came to the plate. Buxton singled and managed to make her way to second through a fielder's choice. With two outs, first year
Kendall Rogoff stepped up to the plate for what appeared to be the perfect scene, set for a walk-off win. With a 2-2 count, and after fouling off four pitches, Rogoff came through with a shot into the right center gap that scored Buxton and secured the Dutch's seat at the Liberty League Championship tournament this week.Â
First year
Catherine Raeter earned the win in game one, striking out four batters in four innings of work.
GAME TWO
Dolinko doubled in the third inning to give Union a 2-0 lead early on. Things remained steady until the top of the sixth, when Skidmore's Paolucci hit a two-run homer to tie things up. In the top of the seventh, Skidmore's lead off hitter, Lizette Roman-Johnston, doubled to center field to plate the go ahead run and give Skidmore its first lead of the game.
The four runs would be enough for game two as the Thoroughbreds defeated Union 4-2.Â
Amanda Carilli earned the game two win for Skidmore, tossing 14 innings across the day and hurling over 180 pitches.Â
