TOURNAMENT CENTRAL
YORK, PA -- The Union College baseball team's historic season came to an end with a 10-4 loss to Virginia Wesleyan in the elimination bracket of the 2018 NCAA Division III Baseball Mid-Atlantic Regional on Saturday night at PeoplesBank Park.
The Dutchmen finish the season with a 31-13 record, marking the most wins in a single season in program history, surpassing the previous mark of 26 wins, which was set three times prior, in 2013, 2014 and 2016. Head coach Paul Mond has now taken the Dutchmen to the NCAA tournament three times in the past five years, and this year marks the furthest the team has progressed in the tournament.
Sophomore
Colin Kelly also set a program record this season, finishing the year with 59 RBI's. Union also batted .345 as a team on the season, ranking in the top 10 of all NCAA DIII programs. Union also had two individuals ranked in the top 50 of the nation for batting averages:
Jack Koch (.433) and
Sean Cullen (.422).
Union got on the board first in the game against the Marlins, as Kelly hit a sac-fly in the top of the first inning to score Koch for the early 1-0 lead. However, the Marlins used three hits and two errors in the bottom of the inning to take a 4-1 advantage.
Wiley Knight hit another sac-fly for the Dutchmen, this time in the second inning to score
Andy Labeck, to cut their deficit to 4-2. Unfortunately, more errors in the third and fifth innings allowed Virginia Wesleyan to score three runs a piece for a 10-2 lead.
The Dutchmen didn't relent and started to chip away at the Marlins' lead. In the sixth,
Sam Kirschenbaum hit a third sac-fly for Union which allowed Kelly to score the team's third run. In the seventh, Koch led off with a triple and
Harrison Glatt followed up with a single to score a fourth run. However, that would be the final run the Dutchmen would score in the contest as the Marlins held on for the 10-4 win.
Overall, Koch went 3-for-5 and scored two runs, while both Kelly and Labeck went 2-for-3 in the contest.
Nick Williams came in for relief in the sixth and kept the Marlins to just one hit, while striking out three batters, through the final three innings to keep the Dutchmen in the game.
Virginia Wesleyan advances to play Rowan, who eliminated Arcadia earlier in the tournament.
