CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Union College women's volleyball team dropped a pair of matches on day two of the Pacific Coast Classic on Saturday, falling to the University of Redlands in straight sets before a tough five-set defeat to the College of Saint Scholastica.
Sophomore
Gillian Gore led the Union (1-3) attack in both matches, finishing the day with a team-leading 27 kills and 24 digs on the way to her third and fourth double-doubles in as many matches so far in 2018.
Redlands 3, Union 0 (25-17, 25-23, 25-19)
Gore had a team-leading 10 kills and added 11 digs, while junior
Maegan Teets also posted a double-double with 13 assists and a team-leading 12 digs. Sophomore
Sage Shimamoto chipped in a team-leading 14 assists as well.
St. Scholastica 3, Union 2 (25-19, 23-25, 25-23, 22-25, 15-9)
Gore again led the team with a match-high 17 kills and chipped in 13 digs and four blocks. She was joined in double figures by sophomore
Lara Atalay, who had a double-double of her own with 13 kills and 11 digs, and classmate
Julia Louis, who added 11 kills on team-best .320 hitting. Teets got the start at setter and finished with 26 assists, while sophomore
Kaylee Velasquez dug out a team-leading 14 balls.
After dropping the opening set, Union jumped out to a quick 9-2 lead in the second stanza. The Saints battled back to knot the score at 17, but the Dutchwomen rattled off four straight points – including two Gore kills and an ace from sophomore
Katie Moss – to regain control and even the match.
The game-clinching rally went the other way in the third set, as it was CSS that scored four in a row with the frame tied at 17 on the way to a 2-1 lead. But Union came back again in the fourth, grabbing an early lead and cruising to the decisive fifth frame. Unlike yesterday, however, the Dutchwomen could not complete the rally, as the Saints scored seven of the first nine points on the way to the win.
Union will return east to play its next eight matches at the Viniar Athletic Center, beginning with the Union Invitational on Friday and Saturday. The weekend begins with two matches against Buffalo State College and Williams College on Friday at 4 p.m. and 8 p.m., respectively.
