ITHACA, N.Y. – The Union College field hockey team had its chances but could not find the back of the net as the Dutchwomen dropped a 2-0 decision to Ithaca College in both teams' Liberty League opener on Saturday afternoon at Higgins Stadium.
The only goal of the opening half came off a penalty corner, as Kristen Rafferty deflected a shot by Maria McGloin into the net to put the Bombers up 1-0 at the half. Ithaca held an 8-6 edge in shots after 35 minutes, while the Dutchwomen led 4-2 in penalty corners.
Union came out strong to begin the second half, putting three shots on the goal of Ithaca's Sevanna Lenker, but again it was Rafferty that would find the net, scoring her second of the game in the 45th minute to double the deficit.
The visitors put some pressure on after that second goal, earning four penalty corners, but could not convert and went quiet offensively for the remainder of the contest. Ithaca finished with a 15-12 edge in shots, as sophomore
Heather Poisson made nine saves to keep her team in the match.
Union will return home on Wednesday to host William Paterson University in a non-conference match starting at 6 p.m.
