POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – Four Dutchmen scored in double figures as the Union College men's basketball team picked up a big Liberty League victory with a 65-60 win on the road at Vassar College on Friday night.
Senior
Kevin McNoble led Union (7-7, 3-5 Liberty League) with another quality all-around effort, leading the team with 15 points, six assists and five steals. Freshman
Mike Concannon added 13 points and a big steal in the final minute off the bench, while sophomore
Jackson Mannix chipped in 11 points and a team-high eight rebounds.
The Brewers led by as many as nine points early in the contest, with the home team grabbing an 18-9 lead with 12:45 remaining in the opening half. But the Dutchmen stormed back with an 18-2 run to take control, with six players scoring during the stretch that put Union up 27-20 with 4:43 left after a layup from senior
Brendan Laing.
Vassar got back within two a few minutes later, but back-to-back buckets from McNoble and Concannon secured the advantage for Union. The Dutchmen led 34-29 at the break behind 11 points from McNoble and eight points from Concannon.
Union held off the home team for the first nine minutes of the second half, but the Brewers mounted a 7-0 run to take back the lead at 46-43 with 9:51 remaining. Jefferson responded with a three to tie the score, and then another triple from Mannix and an old-fashioned three-point play by sophomore
Andrew Laub put the visitors up 52-48 with 4:43 on the clock.
Vassar threatened to get within one possession in the final minute before a huge steal-and-score from Concannon with 43 seconds left made the score 61-54. Jefferson then sealed the win with four free throws in the final 21 seconds.
The Dutchmen finished the game shooting just 40.0 percent (22 of 55) from the field, but the defense stepped up to limit Vassar to 38.3 percent (23 of 60) shooting at the other end. The visitors also connected on 6-of-12 three-pointers and 7-of-9 free throws in the second half to take home the victory.
Union looks to keep the momentum going tomorrow, when the Dutchmen face off with local rival Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute beginning at 4 p.m.
