POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – Vassar College closed the game on an 11-0 run as the first-place Brewers snapped Union College's four-game winning streak with a 64-50 win over the Dutchwomen in Liberty League women's basketball action on Friday night at the Vassar Athletic & Fitness Center.
In a battle between two of the top-three teams in the Liberty League standings, Union (10-4, 5-3 Liberty League) had its winning streak snapped while Vassar (14-2, 8-1 Liberty League) ran its winning streak to 11.
Freshman
Darby Leid led the Dutchwomen in scoring on the night with 12 points, followed by sophomore
IreLee Ferguson with nine points off the bench. Senior
Nicole Conley added a team-best eight rebounds as well for the visitors. Sophie Nick led the Brewers with a game-high 24 points and 13 boards.
Both teams had similar shooting nights, as Union finished at 38.7 percent (24 of 62) and Vassar ended up at 41.3 percent (26 of 63). However, the Brewers had a massive 48-28 edge on the glass against the Dutchwomen, who were playing without junior
Elly Vaughan.
Down 47-40 headed into the fourth quarter, Union again looked to make one of its late-game runs, getting back-to-back layups from Ferguson and freshman
Anna Metcalf to get within three at 53-50 with 6:41 to go. But that was close as the visitors got, as Union went 0-for-7 with three turnovers the rest of the way.
Union will look to regroup and get back in the win column tomorrow, when the team travels to Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute for a 2 p.m. tipoff.
