SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – Senior
Kevin McNoble hit a game-winning three-pointer with less than three seconds left as the Union College men's basketball team held off St. John Fisher College by the score of 80-78 in a non-conference matchup on Tuesday night at the Viniar Athletic Center.
Union (5-5) led for almost the entirety of the second half, but found itself down 78-77 with 26 seconds remaining after a bucket from Fisher's Matt Asenjo. The Dutchmen called two timeouts to set up a final play and the ball ended up in the hands of McNoble, who connected from beyond the arc to put the home team ahead for good.
McNoble only had eight points on the night, but also finished with eight assists, five rebounds and four steals in an excellent all-around effort. Sophomore
Jackson Mannix led all scorers with 21 points, followed by senior
Brendan Laing with 19 points, five rebounds and three blocks.
In the first quarter, McNoble started the game with two beautiful assists to get the Dutchmen going. St. John Fisher (7-4) controlled the offensive glass for the first five minutes of the game until head coach Chris Murphy looked to the bench for Union. The bench provided the spark the Dutchmen needed with a 17-2 run, including a pair of threes from sophomore
Nate Freeman.
In response to the Dutchmen run, the Cardinals went on a 15-5 run of their own to cut the lead to five with 7:24 left in the first half, and the visitors closed out the half making five of their last six threes to take a one-point lead heading into the locker room at 39-38.
To open the second half, McNoble and Laing ignited the Dutchmen offense with three-point plays to take back the lead. This sparked a 11-2 run as junior
Kevin Jefferson added a triple and Laing hit two free throws to give Union a 49-41 advantage.
Union led by as many as 10 in the second stanza, but St John Fisher went on an 8-0 run to bring the lead to within one with 45 seconds to go. The Cardinals took the lead with 26 seconds on the clock on Asenjo's fadeaway that only set the stage for McNoble's dramatics.
Union will return to Liberty League play on Friday night when the Dutchmen welcome Clarkson University to the Viniar Athletic Center for a 7 p.m. tipoff.
