Fourth Quarter Flurry Foils Field Hockey at SLU

CANTON, N.Y. – St. Lawrence University scored three unanswered goals in the decisive fourth quarter to break away from the Union College field hockey team and deal the Dutchwomen a 4-1 defeat in Liberty League action on Friday afternoon at North Country Field.

The loss is a blow to the postseason chances of Union (5-7, 1-3 Liberty League), as the Dutchwomen fall into a three-way tie for fifth place in the conference standings with St. Lawrence (4-9, 1-3 Liberty League) and William Smith College, two games back of fourth place.

The first three quarters were very evenly matched, with Union holding a slight 12-10 edge in shots. Junior Mary Beth Rudolf made four saves on five on-target shots over the first 45 minutes, while SLU counterpart Sydney Giacin was forced to stop eight shots over that span.

After St. Lawrence got on the board first at the 11:24 mark, junior Laura Wind evened the score just 67 seconds before halftime by taking a pass from senior Charlotte Leyland and beating Giacin for her first goal of the season.

Following a scoreless third quarter, the game turned in the final frame, as SLU took nine shots to Union's one and scored three times. The score remained tied until the 50:31 mark, when Isabel Thompson connected on the game-winner. The Saints continued to pressure the Union net but could not score again until a penalty stroke goal and another tally in the final 101 seconds widened the final margin.

Rudolf finished with six saves for Union, while senior Quinn Relihan and freshman Jill Bove were each credited with a defensive save. SLU finished with a 19-13 edge in shots.

The Dutchwomen will return home to close out Homecoming and Family Weekend on Sunday at 1 p.m. against Skidmore College.
