SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – Seniors
Sarah Wilkinson and
Charlotte Leyland provided the offense and a senior-laden defensive unit led the way on the other end as the Union College field hockey team celebrated its five seniors with a 2-0 victory over William Smith College on a soggy Sunday afternoon at Frank Bailey Field at Bertagna-Class of 1985 Stadium.
Sunday's conference finale was a total team effort for Union (6-9, 2-5 Liberty League), which outshot William Smith (5-10, 2-5 Liberty League) by a 13-4 margin and dominated large portions of the game in the at-times rainy conditions.
The Dutchwomen controlled play for the entire opening half, taking eight shots and keeping the Herons without an attempt on goal until the final 65 seconds of the second stanza. Despite their strong play, the teams went into halftime knotted at zero.
Union finally broke through on their third penalty corner of the third quarter, when Wilkinson inserted the ball and then went to the front of the net, where she was able to tip home a shot by junior
Cici Lyne for her second goal of the season.
The defense allowed the lead to stand and Leyland added an insurance goal with 3:08 remaining in the fourth frame, taking a pass from junior
Laura Wind and converting her team-leading seventh goal of the year.
Seniors Leyland, Wilkinson and
Brooke Cleveland combined for 10 of Union's 13 shots, while classmates
Jenna Smith and
Quinn Relihan headed up the defensive unit that conceded only two shots on goal in 60 minutes. Junior
Heather Poisson stopped both on-target attempts for her first shutout of the season and fourth of her career.
Union will close out the 2019 season at home on Wednesday, when the Dutchwomen host Babson College beginning at 7 p.m.
