Leyland Scores Twice as Union Dominates Elms

CHICOPEE, Mass. – Senior Charlotte Leyland scored both Union College goals to lead a dominant offensive effort as the Dutchwomen defeated Elms College by a 2-0 score in non-conference field hockey action at Leary Field.

Leyland continued her excellent play of late with two more goals, giving her a team-leading six tallies on the year. The senior single-handedly outshot the Blazers by a 6-4 margin, as Union finished with a 25-4 edge in shots. Juniors Cici Lyne and Katie Talacci picked up the assists on Leyland's two goals.

It did not take Union long to get on the scoreboard, as Leyland took a pass from Lyne and beat Elms goalie Nora Newman just 4:03 into the contest. The visitors took the only five shots of the opening period.

Both teams had chances in the second and third quarters, but three saves by junior Mary Beth Rudolf kept the Dutchwomen in the lead.

Union then dominated on both ends of the field in the fourth frame, posting a 10-0 edge in shots and earning eight penalty corners to bring the team's total to 18 for the afternoon. Leyland added an insurance tally in the 53rd minute to seal the victory.

Union will look to keep the momentum going on Saturday, when the team travels to Troy to take on Capital Region rival Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute beginning at noon.
