Volleyball Finishes Season with Two Victories

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – The Union College women's volleyball team wrapped up the 2019 season with a pair of wins on day two of the Skidmore College Invitational on Saturday. The Dutchwomen outlasted Plattsburgh State University in a 3-2 victory, then swept SUNY Potsdam 3-0.

Union (14-13) used a balanced offensive attack in the two wins, with four juniors recording 20 or more kills. Lara Atalay led the team with 25 kills, followed by 24 each from Gillian Gore and Julia Louis as well as 23 put-downs from Katie Moss. Gore also had a team-best 40 digs on the day, while Moss added a team-leading five blocks.

Senior Maegan Teets recorded a team-leading 49 assists and four blocks in the final two matches of her collegiate career, while junior Kaylee Velasquez paced the defense with 38 digs.

Union 3, Plattsburgh State 2 (25-11, 25-27, 19-25, 25-16, 15-8)

Union put down a season-high 69 kills in the first match of the day, as the Dutchwomen came back from a set down to outlast Plattsburgh State in a 3-2 victory.

Louis led all players with 15 kills on .333 hitting, followed by Atalay who also hit .333 with 14 kills and just missed a double-double with nine digs. Gore added another double-double to her ledger with 13 kills and 22 digs, while Moss chipped in 11 kills and three blocks.

Velasquez led the defensive effort with a match-best 26 digs and also added five assists, two aces and two kills.

Union rolled through the first set, hitting .452 with 17 kills and three errors on 31 attempts. But the Dutchwomen lost their efficiency over the next two frames, registering 29 kills but hitting .188 in the second set and .028 in the third. Union used a 6-0 run early in the fourth frame to erase an early deficit and take the match to five.

In the decisive fifth frame, Plattsburgh took an early 4-3 lead before Velasquez got the serve back with a kill and sophomore Olivia Salvador served up five straight points that gave the Dutchwomen a comfortable 9-4 advantage. From there, Union just needed to alternate points the rest of the way before Atalay ended the match with an ace.

Union 3, Potsdam 0 (25-14, 25-21, 26-24)

Union closed the day with a strong performance against Potsdam, recording at least 15 kills in each set on the way to a straight-set sweep.

Moss hit .391 with a team-best 12 kills, followed by Atalay and Gore with 11 kills apiece. Gore added 18 digs and Atalay recorded 10 to both pick up double-doubles in the final match of the season. Teets recorded 19 assists, one kill and one block in her final collegiate match as well.

Union never trailed in the opening set, but faced a much more serious challenge in the second stanza, which featured 10 ties and four lead changes. The final tie came at 17-all after an ace by freshman Haley Kresch, followed by back-to-back Louis kills. The Dutchwomen never trailed after that to take a 2-0 lead before closing out the match in the third.
