Women's Soccer Season Ends in Quarterfinals, 1-0

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. — The Union College women's soccer team had several opportunities to score in the second half, but an early goal in the first half from Vassar eluded the Dutchwomen as they dropped a fierce 1-0 match to the Brewers in the Liberty League conference tournament on Tuesday afternoon.

The loss concludes the 2019 season for the Dutchwomen and marks the last game for seniors Linsey Giles, Julia Ferrelli, and Emma Marlow-Benedick as they finish their careers in a Union uniform.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • 16:24 (Vassar 1, Union 0) | Junior Alison Sorkenn did all she could to keep the score tied. Emma Tanner shot to score, and it hit the crossbar. The ball took a bounce directly to Skylar Herrera-Ross as she headed it in and gave the Brewers a 1-0 lead going into halftime.

GAME NOTES:

  • Vassar outshot Union, 11-10 on the day, but the Union offense worked hard in the second half to lead the last forty-five minutes in shots by a 9-5 margin. Sorkenn made six saves, and Vassar's Fiona Walsh made four saves.
  • Sophomore Emma Schleimer, senior Linsey Giles, and first-year Mia Milliken led all Dutchwomen in shots, with 2. Both of Giles' shots were on goal.
  • Union closes out their season with a 9-7-1 ( .559) overall record and a 4-5-1 (.450) record in Liberty League play. Vassar moves on to the next round of the Liberty League conference tournament, where they take on second-seeded RIT on Saturday for a chance to take the title and the NCAA automatic bid.
  • Schleimer (7) and classmate Bella Dworkin (6) both finish their year ranked in the top ten of the Liberty League in goals. First-year Fiona Zimmerman concludes her rookie campaign ranked second in the conference in assists, with seven.
