Women's Hockey Gets First Win at Brown, 4-1

PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Offense shined in the second period, and defense kept the Bears off the scoreboard for a majority of the game, as the Union College women's hockey team collected their first win of the season over Brown, 4-1, at Meehan Auditorium on Saturday afternoon.

After a scoreless first period, the Dutchwomen scored three unanswered goals to give them a massive 3-0 lead that they wouldn't relinquish. Brown eventually got on the board the last few minutes of the third, but an empty-net goal from senior Katelynn Russ to solidify the conference win over the Bears. With the win, Union improves their record to 1-8-1 (1-2-0 ECAC), and Brown falls to 1-6-0 (1-3-0 ECAC).

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • 1:53 2nd (Union 1-0) | After a scoreless first period, Union got on the board first. Senior Ava Reynolds sat in front and passed it to her left to first-year Leah Herrfort. Herrfort passed it across to classmate Emily King, who scored to capitalize on the power play and get her first career goal.
  • 5:38 2nd (Union 2-0) | Sophomore Grace Heiting caught the puck from the air and scored from within the circle to go five-hole on Brown goaltender Hayley Kliczko. Heiting's goal, unassisted, was the eventual game-winner in the conference tilt.
  • 8:39 2nd (Union 3-0) | Herrfort and Reynolds were passing the puck back and forth. Reynolds passed it to junior Helen Markovic, who was sitting open in the right circle, and Markovic went top shelf to the glove side of Klizcko to score and make it a 3-0 game.
  • 16:31 3rd (Union 3-1) | With just minutes remaining in the game, Brown denied a Union shutout by getting on the board. Shay Maloney scored right in front of the net to make it a 3-1 game.
  • 19:04 3rd (Union 4-1) | After taking Klizcko out of the net for an extra attacker, Brown found themselves behind once more. Russ solidified the win by scoring an unassisted empty-net goal to guarantee the win.

GAME NOTES:

  • Union led in shots over the Bears by a 31-20 margin, including a 16-8 margin in the second period alone.
  • First-year goaltender Bella McKee collected her first career win, stopping 19 shots.
  • Not only did King collect her first career goal on the afternoon, but she also led the Dutchwomen in plus/minus, with a +2 rating.
  • Heiting led all skaters on both teams in shots, with six.
  • Herrfort and Reynolds lead the Dutchwomen in points, with two apiece.

WHAT'S NEXT:

The Dutchwomen will head back home for another conference tilt, taking on the #7 Princeton Tigers on Friday, November 15th at Messa Rink. Puck drop is scheduled for 6 p.m.
