Dutchwomen Can't Shake Off Rust in Loss to Fisher

PITTSFORD, N.Y. – Playing for the first time in more than two weeks, the Union College women's basketball team could never get in gear offensively or defensively as the Dutchwomen fell to host St. John Fisher College by an 82-50 score on Tuesday night at Bobby Wanzer Court.

Union (1-3) had trouble finding the net all night long, finishing the evening at 29.1 percent (16 of 55) from the field, and also had trouble stopping a St. John Fisher (6-1) offense that finished shooting 48.4 percent (30 of 62) from the field.

Senior Elly Vaughan was the lone Dutchwoman in double figures for the game, netting 11 points. Freshman Megan Lee chipped in nine points in 22 minutes off the bench, while sophomore Laura Vinton grabbed a team-best eight rebounds and added three steals.

The visitors were within three points at the midway point of the first quarter following a three by sophomore Amber Raisner that made the score 10-7, but Union turned the ball over six times in helping the Cardinals to a quarter-closing 12-2 run that gave the home team a 22-9 edge.

The run continued into the second stanza, as SJFC scored nine of the first 11 points to open up a 31-11 lead with 6:36 on the clock. Union managed to trim the lead to 15 (35-20) at the half thanks to a trifecta from sophomore Anna Metcalf in the final minute.

Union managed more than two consecutive points only twice during the second half, as the Cardinals shot nearly 57 percent from the field over the final 20 minutes to keep the visitors at bay.

St. John Fisher finished the evening with a decisive 48-25 edge in rebounds, led by Ella Eckert with 10 boards to go with her game-high 16 points. As a result, the home team scored 40 points in the paint compared to Union's 28.

Union will look to shake off the loss with the start of conference play this weekend, beginning on Friday night with a 5:30 p.m. tipoff against Clarkson University at the Viniar Athletic Center.
