Dutchwomen Get Tie at St. Lawrence, 1-1

CANTON, NY— Union scored the first goal of the game, and the defense didn't allow any goals for the Saints in the first two periods, but a goal for the home team in the third period forced the game into overtime in Canton. The tie game gives the Union College women's hockey team a 2-11-3 overall record on the season (2-3-1 ECAC Hockey).

Sophomore Maia Martinez scored her second on the season to be the lone Dutchwoman to get on the board. With the goal, the third of her career, Martinez has already doubled her goal total from last season.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • 16:24 2nd (Union 1-0): After a scoreless first period, the Dutchwomen came out in the second ready to start the game off. First-year Leah Herrfort passed the puck off the face-off to her linemate, Martinez, who was waiting at the front to score her second of the season to make it a 1-0 game.
  • 14:41 3rd (SLU 1-1): Anna Segedi scored for the Saints to tie the game at 1. Skylar Podvey was credited with an assist on the play. This goal was the game-tying goal that forced the game into overtime.

GAME NOTES:

  • Herrfort collected her team-leading sixth assist on Martinez's goal. Herrfort is also tied for the team-lead in points, with seven.
  • Shots were in favor of the Saints, 33-26. Union led in shots in the third period with a 10-8 advantage.
  • Juniors Helen Markovic and Megan Ryan, sophomore Grace Heiting, and senior Cheyenne Harris all led the Dutchwomen in shots, with three each.
  • First-year goaltender Bella McKee finished with 32 saves in the tie. Her counterpart from St. Lawrence, Lucy Morgan, finished with 25.

WHAT'S NEXT:

The Dutchwomen continue their North Country road trip and will play the nationally-ranked Clarkson Golden Knights at Cheel Arena in Potsdam on Saturday, December 7. Puck drop is scheduled for 3 p.m. for the conference game.
