SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – Freshman
Mike Concannon scored 13 of his game-high 16 points in the first half as the Union College men's basketball team jumped out to an early lead and never looked back in a convincing 85-64 win over Rochester Institute of Technology on Friday night at the Viniar Athletic Center.
Many players contributed to the win for Union (10-13, 6-11 Liberty League) on the night, with seven players scoring eight points or more. Concannon tied for the game-high with 16 points, while senior
Kevin McNoble added 14 points and six assists and classmate
Brendan Laing chipped in 12 points thanks to 6-of-6 shooting from the line.
The Dutchmen led for almost the entirely of the opening half after jumping out to an early 8-2 lead, thanks to a pair of three-pointers from Concanon and McNoble. RIT (5-19, 2-15 Liberty League) came back to tie the score again, but Union went on another 9-0 run that featured three straight buckets from sophomore
Rhona Eseyade, including big dunks on back-to-back possessions.
Union led by as many as 13 after a three from senior
Ben Lee capped a 14-2 run and put the Dutchmen up 38-25 with 4:00 remaining, but the Tigers scored the final nine points of the frame to get back within four at 38-34 after 20 minutes. The home team shot 48.5 percent (16 of 33) from the field in the half and took care of the basketball, committing only two turnovers.
The home team came out and squelched any hope of a RIT comeback to start the second half, scoring the first 12 points thanks to threes from McNoble, Concannon and sophomore
Temi George. The lead was still only 11 at 62-51 with 11:08 left before the Dutchmen went on one final clinching run, a 12-2 stint supplied entirely by sophomore
Andrew Laub (seven points) and freshman
Mike Manley (five points) that gave Union control the rest of the way.
Union finished the game shooting 48.3 percent (29 of 60) from the field and 43.3 percent (13 of 30) from beyond the arc, while also converting 12 RIT turnovers into 16 points.
Union will close out the 2018-19 campaign tomorrow, as the Dutchmen celebrate their seniors with Senior Day before hosting Hobart College at 4 p.m. at the Viniar Athletic Center.
