NEWBURGH, N.Y. – The Union College men's lacrosse team continued its winning ways to start the 2019 season, moving to 4-0 for the first time since 2015 with a 20-1 victory over Mount St. Mary College on Tuesday afternoon at Kaplan Field.
Junior
Kerry Lyne and freshman
Peter Burnes led Union (4-0) with four goals apiece, with Lyne needing only four shots and Burnes taking only five to score their quartet of tallies. Ten other Dutchmen had at least two points as well in another well-rounded offensive effort.
Union did not give Mount St. Mary much of a shot on the afternoon, outshooting the Knights by a 59-10 margin (34-7 on goal) while winning 21-of-25 draws. Senior
Alex Newhouse went a perfect 8-for-8 at the X and his five ground balls tied for the team-lead with junior
Patrick Regan, who won 6-of-8 draws. Sophomore
Cory Sachs also went 6-1 on faceoffs as well.
Union put together another dominant first quarter against the Knights, scoring the period's only seven goals to run its first-quarter advantage to 23-1 in four games this season. Lyne and sophomore
Aidan Flood led the team with two goals each and freshman
Jack Kaufman recorded his first two career assists in the quarter, as the visitors posted a 19-0 edge in shots.
The Dutchmen continued their offensive attack in the second stanza, outscoring MSMC 7-1 to take a 14-1 lead into the half. Lyne added two more tallies as the visitors scored the first five goals of the period, with freshman
Hank Duvall adding his first collegiate point on Lyne's fourth of the game to end the run. After the Knights got on the board, junior
Eric Zimm scored twice before the halftime horn.
After 30 minutes, Union outshot Mount St. Mary 37-5 while winning 14-of-17 faceoffs.
Burnes took over in the second half, scoring the first four goals of his collegiate career as part of the team's six unanswered tallies. Sophomore
Keaton McCann and freshman
Owen Toland also scored in the second half, with Toland's tally the first of his career.
Senior
Jack Santilli did not make a save in a scoreless first quarter to lower his goals against average to 3.13, the second-lowest GAA in Division III this year. Junior
Graham Goldheim made five saves over the second and third quarters, while freshman
Reed Karaska stopped the only on-target attempt he faced in the fourth.
The Dutchmen will look to remain undefeated on Friday, when the team heads to Williams College for a tough test against the Ephs beginning at 6 p.m.
