Union Cruises Past Babson in Home Opener

Video Highlights

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. –
The Union College men's lacrosse team used a well-balanced attack and stifling defense to cruise past Babson College, 17-5, in the Dutchmen's 2019 home opener on Saturday afternoon at Frank Bailey Field at Bertagna-Class of 1985 Stadium.

Despite putting 17 goals on the scoreboard, no player had more than two tallies for Union (2-0). Senior John Edmonds led the Dutchmen with three points on two goals and an assist, while five players – junior Michael Sands, freshman Gregory Andrea and sophomores Brian Davis, Aidan Flood and Keaton McCann – all had two goals apiece as well.

Union also had a big edge at the faceoff X, winning 18-of-25 draws, helped largely by an 8-for-8 effort by junior Patrick Regan. The Dutchmen also posted a 42-26 edge in ground balls, led by six from Regan.

The home team dominated the proceedings in the opening quarter, outshooting Babson 17-2 and scoring the only six goals of the frame. Davis started the game off at the 3:52 into the contest, followed by Sands' first of the game exactly 60 seconds later. Two goals in 30 seconds by Edmonds and Flood doubled the advantage midway through the quarter, before Davis' second and one from senior Andrew Blau capped the frame.

After outscoring the Beavers 3-1 in the second quarter, Union put the game away with another six-spot in the third. Six different players scored in the stanza for the Dutchmen, including a beautiful behind-the-back score by Andrea for his first collegiate tally.
Senior Jack Santilli had an excellent game between the pipes, turning aside 6-of-8 shots in 42:33 of action while also causing three turnovers and picking up three ground balls. Junior Graham Goldheim also made one save in 11:46 of action while freshman Reed Karaska made his collegiate debut as well for the Dutchmen.

Union will be back in action on Wednesday, when the team travels to Williams College for a 6 p.m. faceoff with the Ephs.
