Egna Comeback Highlights Men's Tennis Win

Results

HILTON HEAD, S.C. –
The Union College men's tennis team continued its red-hot start to the season on Sunday, as the Dutchmen kicked off Spring Break with a fifth straight victory, 6-3 over the University of St. Thomas, at the Hilton Head Beach and Tennis Club.

Sophomore Max Egna and freshman Ioannis Binopoulos both won a pair of matches to lead Union (5-0) to the victory, as the Dutchmen continue the longest season-opening winning streak since the 1983 team started the season 6-0.

Union started the day by taking two of the three doubles points to grab an early lead. Binopoulos and junior David Bond made quick work of Nick Vossen and Erich Nuss in an 8-1 win at second doubles, but freshmen Cameron Klepper and Nick Weitzman came up just short in a tough 8-6 third-doubles match to even the score.

But the match of the day came from Max and Austin Egna at first doubles, as the twins staged a huge rally to put Union ahead. The sophomore tandem trailed 6-1 to Sterling Sibley and Tristan Fjelstad before storming back to win six of the next seven games to force a tiebreaker. In the tiebreaker, the Egnas saved a pair of match points and won the final four points to post a huge 11-9 win.

Taking that momentum into singles play, Union got a quick point thanks to Binopoulos's 6-0, 6-1 win over Sibley at first singles, then Klepper put the Dutchmen on the verge of victory with a big comeback in his 3-6, 6-2, 1-0 (10-4) fourth-singles win over Jordan Schenck.

With the match coming down to the fifth and sixth singles flights, senior Zach Kaplan clinched the victory with a 6-2, 6-4 win at sixth singles over Nuss and Max Egna completed his perfect day with a 7-5, 6-1 triumph over Eshan Varma at the fifth flight.

Union will look to keep the perfect record intact tomorrow, when the team takes on Carleton College beginning at 2 p.m.
