POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – Sophomore
Keaton McCann scored a career-high four goals and senior
Jack Santilli turned aside a career-best 17 shots as #15 Union College won its eighth straight game with an 8-5 victory over Vassar College in Liberty League men's lacrosse action on Saturday afternoon at Weinberg Field.
The win sets up Union (12-1, 7-0 Liberty League) for a first-place showdown with nationally ranked RIT on Wednesday to decide which team will take the top seed in the Liberty League regular-season standings.
McCann had two goals in the first quarter and two more in the fourth to lead the Dutchmen in the low-scoring affair. Junior
Michael Sands added three points on a goal and two assists, while classmate
Kerry Lyne scored twice as well for the visitors.
Union was actually shot by a 37-32 margin on the afternoon, but Santilli came up huge with his 17 saves on 22 on-target attempts, making 11 saves in the first half and six more in the second 30 minutes of play.
The Dutchmen looked to be in good shape after the first quarter, in which the visitors scored four of the five goals to take an early lead. McCann scored less than a minute into the contest, followed by a Lyne score and another from McCann to take a 3-0 with 5:17 left. Vassar got on the board less than a minute later, but Sands found the net with one second left to put Union up 4-1 after 15 minutes of play.
The Brewers fought back with the only goal of the second stanza and the first two of the third to tie the score before a goal by junior
Eric Zimm put the visitors back ahead. Vassar tied the score again soon after, before Lyne gave Union the lead for good with 29 seconds left in the third.
The Dutchmen then closed the door in the fourth quarter, keeping Vassar off the scoreboard and getting a pair of McCann tallies to account for the final score.
Union will close out the regular season at home on Wednesday with a showdown against nationally ranked RIT beginning at 5 p.m. at Frank Bailey Field at Bertagna-Class of 1985 Stadium.
