SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – The senior class combined for eight of Union College's 11 goals as the Dutchwomen sent off their seniors with an 11-9 victory over Vassar College in Liberty League women's lacrosse action on a brisk Saturday afternoon at Frank Bailey Field at Bertagna-Class of 1985 Stadium.
Union (8-7, 5-5 Liberty League) won its second straight game to end the regular season, placing the team in a three-way tie for fifth in the conference standings. Unfortunately for the Dutchwomen, they lose the combined tiebreaker with Vassar (8-7, 5-5 Liberty League) and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute to finish the year just on the outside of postseason contention.
Senior
Hannah Rosenberger had an excellent effort in her final game, scoring a career-high five goals for the second straight game. Sophomore
Lindsay Gerrato scored three times and controlled 10 draws, while senior
Ramsey Walsh had two goals and classmate
Kellie Cronin also found the net on Senior Day.
Rosenberger got the scoring started on the game's first possession and Union never trailed the rest of the way. Cronin and Gerrato also scored to put the home team up 3-0 before Vassar got on the board for the first time. The Dutchwomen led 5-4 late in the half before a three-goal run for Union, capped by goals from Gerrato and Rosenberger with 25 seconds and six seconds remaining, respectively, in the half.
Union extended its run to five with the first two goals of the second stanza, building up the largest lead of the game at 10-4 with 19:32 on the clock. Vassar scored four in a row to get back within two, but Walsh took a nice feed from sophomore
Isabel Bush and deposited the ball into the net to give the home team some breathing room down the stretch.
Up by two with under two minutes remaining, Walsh made a great defensive play to cause a Brewer turnover in transition, allowing Gerrato to scoop up the ball and help secure the victory.
Junior
Ellie Taney had a strong game between the pipes with 11 saves, including six stops in the first half as Union built up its lead.
Saturday's game marks the final in the collegiate careers of Union's seven seniors: Rosenberger, Walsh, Cronin,
Elena Driscoll,
Megan Fitzgerald,
Emma Lowrey and
Julia Pfohl.
