SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – The Union College men's lacrosse team, ranked 20th in Division III in the latest USILA National Poll, scored 11 of the game's last 13 goals to stun Ithaca College in a 14-10 victory on a beautiful Saturday afternoon at Frank Bailey Field at Bertagna-Class of 1985 Stadium.
The win is a huge one for Union (9-1, 3-0 Liberty League), which remains unbeaten in conference play with their fifth straight victory. Sophomore
Hayden Frey led the Dutchmen with five points on three goals and two assists, while classmate
Brian Davis added three goals and an assist in a four-point outing.
Senior
Alex Newhouse was arguably the team's most important player, as the FOGO won 21-of-25 draws and finished with 13 ground balls to help control the game for the home team. In all, the Dutchmen won 23-of-28 faceoffs in a dominant team effort.
The first 15 minutes of play featured great play by both squads, as Ithaca (7-3, 3-2 Liberty League) took a 4-3 lead into the second. Junior
Michael Sands opened the scoring 2:15 into the contest, but a string of four straight IC goals put the Dutchmen down by three with 4:24 on the clock. However, Union responded with two goals in 15 seconds from sophomore
Aidan Flood and Frey to get back within one.
Ithaca again strung together four straight tallies to start the second quarter to take an 8-3 lead with 3:09 left in the half, but the Union comeback started with a man-down goal by junior
Josh Willis that brought the home team within four headed into halftime.
Willis' goal started a streak of 10 straight Union tallies, as the Dutchmen completely flipped control of the contest. Davis started the third quarter with his first of the game 4:39 into the period, followed by a goal from sophomore
Kieran McGovern and then two in a row by Frey that knotted the score at eight with 3:14 left. McGovern completed the comeback with his second of the day that gave Union its first lead at 9-8 after 45 minutes of play.
Union kept rolling with the first four goals of the final frame, capped off by a gorgeous feed by Davis that set up sophomore
Keaton McCann for his second goal of the afternoon. Ithaca attempted to get back into the game with a pair of tallies, but the Union defense came up big and Davis scored with 1:35 to go to seal the victory.
Senior
Jack Santilli had another excellent game between the pipes, making eight of his 13 saves in the second half, while junior
Jimmy Connelly led the defensive effort with six ground balls and three caused turnovers.
Union's game against Bard scheduled for Wednesday has been cancelled, so the Dutchmen will return to action next Saturday against nationally ranked St. Lawrence University in Canton starting at 2:30 p.m.
