ITHACA, N.Y. – The sixth-seeded Union College men's tennis team had its 2018-19 season come to a close on Friday evening, as the Dutchmen dropped a 5-1 decision to third-seeded and ITA #35 Hobart College in the first round of the Liberty League Tournament at Cornell University's Reis Tennis Center.
 
Union (6-9), which qualified for the conference tournament for the first time ever and was making its first conference tournament berth overall since 2014, had some chances to earn points, but ultimately came up short in its bid for a first postseason victory since 2005. Hobart (13-6) advances to the semifinals, where they will face second-seeded RPI tomorrow.
 
The Dutchmen fell behind 2-1 after doubles play despite a good 8-7 (7-3) third-doubles win for freshmen Cameron Klepper and Nick Weitzman over Colin Mollow and Thomas Shung.
 
Hobart then captured the first three singles matches, ending the contest early. Union was competitive in the three remaining matches, as senior Zach Kaplan had taken the first set of his sixth-singles match and Klepper had split the first two sets of his second-singles contest, but the Dutchmen were unable to extend the match to make those matches count.
 
The loss brings Union's successful season to an end, a year in which a team comprised primarily of freshmen and sophomores earned a conference tournament berth and saw six of its nine losses come to nationally ranked competition.
